As the weather gets warmer, no doubt we love to get out for a boardwalk stroll or a stop off to a casino or boardwalk eatery. Lately though, you may be at risk for a "hot foot" as boardwalk fires are becoming a regular thing. "May is gray" took on a new meaning as fire erupted with plums of gray smoke, burning through 2,400 square feet and damaging a casino marquee at Resorts. Firefighters were called to the boardwalk on May 1st at 3:48pm. A quick response led to minimal damage. The Sushi bar was evacuated along with the Landshark Bar & Grill nearby as a precaution. The fire went up about 15 feet, burning half of the marquee sign and wall near Mukashi Sushi Bar. There were no injuries according to Fire Chief Scott Evans. Evans estimated an 80x60 section of the boardwalk was damaged and will be closed off for the foreseeable future. In recent years, the homeless population have sought year-round shelter with encampments under the boardwalk. With that, self-made campfires have gotten out of control resulting in boardwalk fires leading to structural damage. Salute to our local firefighting heroes, Engines 1,2,3 and 6 along with ladder 1, Rescue 1 and Battalion 1 for their rapid response resulting in maximum effectiveness.
